Frank Mason is a bank robber with a kind heart and enough troubles to last him a lifetime. His marriage is a disaster, but he dare not leave his wife, Doris, for fear of what his gangster father-in-law, Ted Sims, might do to him. His mistress, Linda, is becoming more and more demanding. The money from the last robbery is running out and he dreads the thought of the next one - and the long prison sentence he will recieve if he is caught.
The only way out is to pull one last job which will give him enough money to retire on. His target is a bank on the island of Madeira, and his plan of escape is so crazy that it just might work. But what Frank does not realise is that his old enemy, Chief Superintendent Gower, already has some knowledge of the job - and that some of his own gang are planning a fiendish double-cross!
