Product Description

Product Description
This new edition of a popular textbook provides a lucid introduction to anatomy within the context of athletics covering the physics and engineering of sport and the athletic body. It presents specific analysis of exercises designed to improve jumping ability, throwing ability, kicking ability, height, strength, mobility and agility. The general characteristics of bone, joints and muscles are related to their function in specific sports. Guidelines for flexibility and strength training are included, and the biomechanical aspects of exercise are elucidated from both theoretical and practical perspectives. "Athletic Ability and the Anatomy of Motion" is a bridge between the biomechanics and the practice of sport. The organisation begins with chapters on the relevant anatomy and basic mechanics and working through to the application of this theory in sport. Chapters 1, General Anatomy of Bones, Joints and Muscles, and 6, Sports Mechanics, have been extensively revised for this new edition. In addition, the further reading section is updated and expanded, and all of the anatomical terminology has been reviewed to ensure that it is correct and up to date. The successful, straightforward style of illustration will be retained. Approximately 40 new artworks have been added. Overall the changes have increased the size of the book by 40 pages. Review of the first edition: "Very interesting and informative and, at the price, I would recommend it to both students and qualified staff. It is well set out with over three hundred very good diagrams covering anatomy, physiology and exercises. The biomechanics should prove useful either as new or refresher material before proceeding to the more weighty tomes on this subject." - "Physiotherapy".

5.0 out of 5 stars GREAT. And in plain English, too., 8 Sep 1999
By A Customer
This book shows you clearly the human body anatomy in plain English, so you don`t have to be a doctor to read it. I`m studying Martial Arts and I can now see why some exercises are good for my training and - this is most important - I can avoid wrong movements because I know how the human body moves. It improved the quality of my training. I strongly recommend it for everyone who wants to understand what he is doing and why instead of merely accepting it from coaches and intrusctors.

5.0 out of 5 stars Excellent intermediate work, 20 Feb 2003
By A Customer
This book is full of excellent line drawings by the author, most of which are central to the text; anatomy and biomechanics cannot easily be explained without reference to models and diagrams and this book accomplishes that better than almost any other book on anatomy or biomechanics I have seen. The first chapters focus on basic principles of human anatomy and biomechanics, told in plain English and using technical terms usually in brackets.

Subsequent chapters focus on different areas of the body, giving more detailed anatomy, along with biomechanical reasons for the structure. These chapters also give many examples of ways to stretch and strengthen the various muscles, along with exercises or movements which are likely to cause more harm than good. Again, the text is simple, and technical terms are usually in brackets.

The final section collates the various stretching exercises and is followed by lists of muscles, their origins, insertions and actions.

This is not a particularly technical work, and more advanced readers will perhaps be frustrated by it's fairly basic level. However, it is an excellent introduction to biomechanics and a useful reference book.

5.0 out of 5 stars The body is a marvelous thing, 31 Jul 2007
By ISCA (England) - See all my reviews
If you are a sportsman or just interested in keeping fit then this book is most useful.
It is an uncomplicated guide to the anatomy and function of the muscles and ligaments.
Good clear line drawings with the working parts highlighted in red help explain 1)what is going on during motion 2)what can go wrong 3)how to exercise effectively 4) how to stretch effectively and the reasons behind it all.
There is a useful section in the back with the name of every muscle; its place of origin and place of insertion.
