5.0 out of 5 stars Another great example of Beatrix Potter's work, 12 April 2006
By Kurt A. Johnson (Marseilles, Illinois, USA) - See all my reviews

When Benjamin Bunny and his children, the "Flopsy Bunnies," go to Mr. McGregor's rubbish heap, they are pleasantly surprised to find it filled with overgrown lettuces. They eat their fill, and then fall asleep. When they are found by Mr. McGregor and put in a bag, Thomasina Tittlemouse comes to their rescue.

This cute little book is another great example of Beatrix Potter's (1866-1943) work. The story is simple and yet fun, and the watercolor illustrations (also by Ms. Potter) are excellent. Now, at one point the bunnies are caught and Mrs. McGregor says, "I shall skin them and cut off their heads." So, if you are afraid of scaring your little one, you might want to simply not read that line.

Overall, I found this to be a wonderful story, one that I enjoy reading to my little one. We both highly recommend this book!

5.0 out of 5 stars Some of the Best Stories for Young Children, 13 May 2007
By J. Chippindale (Yorkshire, England) - See all my reviews

The Tale of Peter Rabbit was written in 1900 and has stood the test of time very well. Generations of children have loved the story of Peter Rabbit, Squirrel Nutkin and Jemima Puddle-Duck among others and treasured the books of Beatrix Potter. It is up there among the greats of children's literature with Wind in the Willows, The Water Babies, Peter Pan, Treasure Island and many others.

In these days of computer games and electronic toys of one kind or another, books sadly are sometimes not as high on the list as they were a few years ago, perhaps that is why literacy in schools is not all that it could be. Personally as a child books were always my first love and Christmas would not have been the same without a Rupert annual.

Stories that involve animals as the main characters in books always seem to fascinate young children and Peter Rabbit has always been up there with the best. Next time you have to buy a present for a child, or even want to treat one of your younger grandchildren for no particular reason. Instead of looking for the latest DVD why not buy them a book. Peter Rabbit is a good one to start with.
