5.0 out of 5 stars Jeremy Fisher - the fisherman's fisherman, 20 April 2003
By MATTHEW (NR CALNE, WILTSHIRE United Kingdom) - See all my reviews
Probably the book that creates the imaginative stimulus for most anglers to go fishing for the first time. Potter's timeless illustrations detail the soft country lighting of the river bank where Jeremy the frog goes fishing for minnows, setting the idyllic scene that all fisherman seek. The tranquility of the river counterposed against the unknown of what lies beneath - particularly the rising monster trout that almost ends Jeremy's fishing trip and life - shows that Potter realised that nature's dark side can only be softened by the welcome environment of the home and friends as evidenced in so much of Potter's writing with Jeremy returning home safe. The anxiety this generates in five year old is as profound as any modern slasher video. This sense of home being where the heart is that Potter referred to again and again as with Peter the Rabbit's exhausted collapse on his mother's floor after his adventures in Mr. McGregor's garden. Potter was a genius at humanising animals without taking an overtly sentimental tone. She taps into the childlike but not childish sensations of home, the fear of life beyond the doorstep, belonging, comradeship and belief in the pastoral theme of Old England not seen since Dicken's Pickwick Papers. Jeremy Fisher is a story that hold true to old values with illustrations that live longer than the narrative. A book to cherish.

5.0 out of 5 stars Still One of the Best Children's Stories, 11 May 2007
By J. Chippindale (Yorkshire, England) - See all my reviews
(TOP 50 REVIEWER)    (REAL NAME)

The Tale of Peter Rabbit was written in 1900 and has stood the test of time very well. Generations of children have loved the story of Peter Rabbit and Jemima Puddle-Duck among others and treasured the books of Beatrix Potter. It is up there among the greats of children's literature with Wind in the Willows, The Water Babies, Peter Pan, Treasure Island and many others.

In these days of computer games and electronic toys of one kind or another, books sadly are sometimes not as high on the list as they were a few years ago, perhaps that is why literacy in schools is not all that it could be. Personally as a child books were always my first love and Christmas would not have been the same without a Rupert annual.

Stories that involve animals as the main characters in books always seem to fascinate young children and Peter Rabbit has always been up there with the best. Next time you have to buy a present for a child, or even want to treat one of your younger grandchildren for no particular reason. Instead of looking for the latest DVD why not buy them a book. Peter Rabbit is a good one to start with.

It's the best book i've read and i have read a lot in my time. The book has it's funny parts and its sad parts but it is all right in the end.The book is about a frog who is having a party and he needs to go fishing for minnows but everything dosen't always go his way.Read the book and find out what happens to Jeremy Fisher.
