Product Description

Amazon.co.uk Review

Did you know that you use less than 1 percent of your brain? The good news is that world-renowned brain expert and mind map inventor Tony Buzan can help you to access the other 99 percent. Buzan's book Head First is dedicated to helping you prove you are smarter than you think. The main message is that every one of us possesses multiple natural intelligences. As Buzan explains, "We don't just possess the one standard intelligence quota or 'IQ' that we've all heard of, we each have an amazing ten different intelligences. These intelligences include creative, social, physical, sexual and spiritual skills". Buzan argues that a truly intelligent person is not one who can simply spout words or numbers but one who can react "intelligently" to all situations. Head First shows us how to do this. The book is divided into 10 chapters, each one devoted to a different intelligence. Each chapter contains practical advice and exercises, case studies, a brain work-out and ends with a test to help you gauge how you are doing. The book also contains tips on how to draw mind maps (and has many plate sections with colourful examples) to help you learn how to recall information easily and organise facts and thoughts in such a way that your brain is engaged right from the start. Buzan advises working on each intelligence in turn and starting by working on the area you feel weakest in. If you don't manage to finish the whole book with all it's hundreds of exercises, remember Buzan's promise: "Each intelligence is linked so when you consciously develop one intelligence, you subconsciously improve the others too". --Scarlet Harper

5.0 out of 5 stars The fantastic user's instruction manual for the Brain., 20 Nov 2000
By K. Norman (UK) - See all my reviews
(REAL NAME)
Tony Buzan simplifies and demystifies the brain and the ways in which it works. Using anecdotes, personal experences and self assessment tests he highlights that we underutilise this most incredible of computers. Like a muscle the brain benefits from 'exercise' and Tony suggests that we have enormous - no unlimited - potential should we use more than our current 1% capacity!

Working through the exercises in the book highlights your own strengthes and weaknesses and suggests strategies to develop all 10 human intellegences

I was engrossed in this book and read it from cover to cover in three sittings but I do have a couple of niggles. The book doesn't always practise what it preaches - it could do with a lot more images to illustrate its points and the use of more colour would have been welcome. Interestingly the pages for note taking are lined and not blank to facilitate mind mapping - surely an oversight.

5.0 out of 5 stars HEAD FIRST giving you a Head Start !!!!!!, 22 Nov 2000
By A Customer
Buzan provides a crisp and very futuristically creative handbook for the ultimate self-development of an individual's most valuable, but under-utilised tool.....the Human Brain.

I am currently reading the first chapter, all about creativity....and I tell you, this guy is brilliant. How many uses can you think of for a paper clip [in 2 minutes]???

Buzan has re-opened my mind and has refuelled my enthusiasm for self-development.

As Buzan puts it....we are now in a new Millennium, now it is time for the Brain Age.

4.0 out of 5 stars It's there somewhere!, 30 Oct 2003
By A Customer
If you can put up with the very informal and chatty style of this book, then you'll find some very interesting gems of information. But it's hard work! It would have been nicer to have had a smaller format and kept to the bare facts, rather than having to trawl through tons of verbiage. Give it a go, but only if you're a very selective speed-reader!
