Book Description
Burned out and Blue is an essential guide to help people through depression. In contrast to other books on depression, it comes from a leading media friendly psychologist and stress management consultant and is written in a lively interactive style, full of boxed features, shared case histories, questions to ask practitioners, question and answer sections, useful lists and encouraging affirmations. Clinical psychologist Kristina Downing-Orr has put together a valuable holistic lifestyle manual for everyone living with mild to severe depression. This book prepares the reader for what to expect from different types of counselling, drug and complementary therapy and what to look for in a practitioner. It cuts through the myths and stigmas surrounding depression, looking at the underlying emotional issues and to build self-esteem.

Synopsis
This interactive text has boxed features, shared case histories, questions to ask practitioners, question and answer sections, useful lists, and affirmations to encourage. It covers: how to find a practitioner and what they do; all types of counselling, and cognitive and other therapeutic techniques; establishing your symptoms and how to get the most accurate medical diagnosis possible; questions to ask your doctor; a guide to antidepressants, how they work, and guidance if you are coming off them; and herbal health (with remedies such as St John's Wort and Kava Kava).

5.0 out of 5 stars Informative guide for coping with depression, 12 Feb 2002
By A Customer
If you or a loved one is suffering from depression this guide will help you to understand the illness better. The book contains lots of stories from people who have had depression which helps you to feel that you are not alone in your suffering. Different treatments, including drugs, counselling and alternative therapies are discussed in an informative and helpful way. The book also offers suggestions on lifestyle changes which could help. There are never any miracle cures or easy answers but this book provides a lot of helpful infomation on a subject which is often difficult to discuss.

1.0 out of 5 stars blue, not brain dead, 2 April 2004
By A Customer
This is one of the most vapid works on depression in print. Full of tricksy and unhelpful anecdotes its tone is patronising, and unlikely to be sympathetic to anyone actually suffering from depression. It comes as no surprise to see in the 'author blurb' that this is the work of a media medic, since it comprises nothing but superficial sound-bites.
