5.0 out of 5 stars A good reference for all of the important taichi principles, 5 May 2000
By A Customer
I've given this book five stars mainly for the stress it applies to the correct integration of all of the taichi principles into the practitioners everyday pratice. Explanations are given for how each principle applies to beginner, intermediate and advanced students. Even if you have a good teacher it is still difficult to remember all of the principles that you must apply during all of your forms - you can just keep going back to this book to refresh your memory. In addition, the book stresses the martial nature of taichi which is often overlooked. Even though the book refers to the 'Old Yang' style of taichi (more martially oriented than more recent 'Yang' flavours), practitioners of any style will be able to benefit because the principles are always the same - I myself am studying the Chen style. The book begins with some history of taichi and a nice and concise explanation of what health and fitness benefits you'll gain with practice. If you're looking for a comprehensive study of taichi, don't buy this book. If you're looking for a book that you'll keep gaining from during your taichi studies, do buy it.

5.0 out of 5 stars Tai Chi' is a way of life, not a phase. Invaluable reading., 12 Dec 2000
By A Customer
The only way you'll learn Tai Chi' is from a teacher! I don't care how good or how many pictures there are in a book, as a new student myself studying under one of Paul Brechers' students, those trying to learn it will agree with me. Paul's book has so much information on how to understand the changes and the new phenomenon which occur inside your body while learning this Art, that you will keep re-reading this book and learn something every time you do. The way Paul has written this book is quite different. The same book is geared for all people wanting to learn this ancient martial art, from Beginner through Intermediate to Advanced. After nearly one year of studying this style, and also having studied Ninjitsu previously, the theory behind the original Tai Chi' form is truly frightning. If you are interested in learning this for real, you need to read this book to understand why you feel the things you do while practicing. The Old Yang Style Long Form will not only take you to a spiritually higher place and make you a formidable martial artist, but it will make you a happier and healthier person along the way.

5.0 out of 5 stars An excellent introduction, but a useful advanced tool too., 22 Jan 2000
By A Customer
Paul Brecher's Principles of Tai Chi is actually one of the most concise and helpful guides I've even encountered for the martial art. Where most people think Tai Chi is a sort of 'floppy' exercise for old men and young girls, Brecher illuminates the more active elements that form its basis. This is also chock full of insider information and 'secret' knowledge without which the art is only providing about half of its possible benefits. Excellent material.
