5.0 out of 5 stars In the car essential!, 19 Feb 2004
By Peg (Bristol, United Kingdom) - See all my reviews
I have found the Manual of Equine Practice invaluable to me during my clinical years at vet school, and I am sure it will accompany me in the car at all times when I qualify. The book contains clear descriptions and pictures for complete physical examination, including all of the things which seem so obvious that you are afraid to ask about them! The second chapter provides comprehensive lists of differentials for common presenting complaints and tells you which diagnostic tests will be most useful for each presentation.

The chapter on Diagnostic Imaging has loads of diagrams and photos to illustrate interpretation of ultrasound, both for lameness and systemic disease. The radiography section is very brief, but lists all the standard views.

The middle section of the book has chapters on each body system, describing examination and diagnostic techniques, followed by a section on the main diseases, their diagnosis, differentials and treatment. Different chapters are written by experts in that field, but the whole book has a uniform format which is really easy to use, emphasising History, Presenting Signs, Clinical Findings, Diagnosis and Treatment. Throughout the book, the key points are highlighted.

The chapter on Musculoskeletal System is excellent - it has tons of photos showing a full lameness examination and all the nerve and joint blocks. The essential information is given, and further reading is listed after each disease - so you don't have to trawl through a massive list at the end of the chapter to find the relevant references.

There is a chapter on Practical Clinical Pathology, which gives 8 clinical case studies to work through. I found this section really useful; the feedback section has lots of practical advice on interpretation of lab results. There are also chapters on Clinical Nutrition, Anaesthesia and Therapeutics - again with plenty of illustrations of methods of drug administration. Finally, the appendix contains dose rates, indications and routes of administration for commonly used drugs.

I recommend this book to any vet student interested in equine medicine, and I certainly won't leave home without it when I start my first job!
