Product Description

Review

Quim Monzo is today's best known writer in Catalan. He is also, no exaggeration, one the world great short-story writers. This novel shows all his idiosyncrasy and originality. We have at last gained the opportunity to read (in English) one of the most original writers of our time. --The Independent

Quim Monzo has managed to create a novel in which life and death are drawn with a untameable peculiarity. He saves the reader from despair and leads them to trust blindly in the morality of high literature --El Pais

Product Description

At once a dirty joke and a highbrow novel, The Enormity of the Tragedy tells the bizarre story of Ramon Maria, a balding, middle-aged. trumpet-player who wakes up one day with a massive never-ending erection. Hailed across Europe as a masterpiece of literary parody, it is bound to be one day seen as the biggest rival yet to Philip Roth's Portnoy's Complaint

5.0 out of 5 stars A book that won't be forgotten in a hurry, 5 Aug 2008
By B. WATT "Culture Vulture" (London United Kingdom) - See all my reviews
(REAL NAME)
'The Enormity of the Tragedy' was sent to me as a gift from a friend and I have to say that I hungrily consumed the novel in a couple of sittings. The narrative explores issues of sexuality and human relationships. It also explores notions of identity. The odd thing is the book is being sold on the central premise of the man with the unwanted permanent erection, but by the time the novel has finished, it's the fully developed characters that stand out. I should also mention that the novel is funny. Highly recommended, if you want something a little different...
