5.0 out of 5 stars It's a great book! Oh no it isn't! Oh yes it is!!, 20 Feb 2002

Do you write pantos, or are you just the sort of person who can't wait for 'that time of the year' to come around again? If either of these are you then a)are you male and single (only joking)! and b) you must buy this book. Paul Harris is a local radio presenter for the BBC in Kent and is also one of the U.K.'s top panto dames and has written and produced various pantos over the years. (If the name sounds familiar, you night also have heard of him through 'Titter Not').
This book is a comprehensive guide to panto's history, development and gags. It also contains countless routines which regular panto-goers will recognise and which will be invaluable if writing pantos is 'your bag'. If you're passionate enough about panto to buy this book, I'm sure you wont regret it! As for your days of panto history ignorance, 'they're behind you!!'

THIS WONDERFUL BOOK IS INVALUABLE TO ALL PANTOMIME COMPANIES - ESPECIALLY IF YOU WRITE YOUR OWN SCRIPTS AS WE DO.

EVERY ROUTINE IS A GEM AND OFF THE MANY THAT WE HAVE ALREADY DONE, THEY HAVE GONE DOWN A STORM

BUY IT NOW - YOU WILL NOT REGRET IT

4.0 out of 5 stars Must reply to J A Edwards!, 4 Sep 2007

I agree that the sketches lie "dead on the page", but that is simply because they aren't written to be read, but to be used on-stage - interpreted by a writer, director and the cast.

I have used it for the last three or four scripts I have written and it has been invaluable in bringing an old-school traditional feel into play. I wouldn't want that all the way through, but a couple of sketches placed here and there work very well.

I did find it difficult to see the humour in many at first, but decided to trust them and give them a try. Of course the cast soon bring them alive and the silly humour is there for all to see - especially by the children, who lap them up.

It's all very well to suggest seeing as many pantos as possible, but so many are just under-rehearsed tosh - especially 'professional' ones - where the idea seems just to give the star-turn some exposure. These sketches are a collection of standards, not a 'teach-you-how-to-be-funny' course.

The collection is a very useful reference and the only one I have found. It should to be used as inspiration and interpreted in a creative way. As for improvisation - I think the book promotes this, rather than demanding its scenes be used verbatim. It needs reading with a little imagination. The cast do need to be able to act and improvise appropriately to put these across, but they can look elsewhere for a book that teaches that.

I think anyone writing or staging a pantomime would consider the price worth paying for any help and inspiration.

2.0 out of 5 stars A valiant attempt, but a contradiction in terms.
As soon as I read the first few sections of this book, I realised that what the author is trying to do, record pantomime humour in a book, is actually impossible. Read more
