5.0 out of 5 stars From the cover...., 5 Dec 2006

Trevor Howard was a unique man with a distinctive acting talent. Perhaps best known for his leading roles in the classic 1945 film BRIEF ENCOUNTER and in RYAN'S DAUGHTER, made in 1971, he had a long career in theatre and film that spanned fifty incident-packed years. As well as being one of the most charismatic British actors, this complex personality had a private life as contradictory as it was colourful. After an early upbringing in Ceylon followed by British public school, he found it hard to form close attachments as an adult, despite his hell-raising lifestyle and reputation as a ladies' man. Apart from women, his other lifelong passions were cricket and heavy drinking -- the latter to cause both professional and personal problems and to precipitate his death, aged seventy-four, in 1988.

Terence Pettigrew became a personal friend of Howard's towards the end of the actor's life and interviewed him extensively for this book -- often in the pub near Howard's home -- also coming to know well his widow, Helen. The result is this first in-depth and long-awaited study of a much-loved, private and complex man, replete with reminiscences by the actor himself, by his wife and by the actors, directors and other friends and colleagues who knew him over the years.

As well as putting his long and distinguished career in context, this forthright and honest book analyses the contradictory aspects of Howard's personality -- one minute an outspoken rabble-rouser, the next a courteous and considerate gentleman -- to reveal for the first time the man behind the myth.
