‘A shifty low-key thriller, half Spellbound, half Daphne du Maurier’ (Stewart O’Nan 20051028)

Hidden is not really like anything you’ve read before’ (Anna Quindlen )

(Sunday Telegraph )

‘Well-plotted...sensitive’

'Hidden... is a first novel of both powerful and poignant emotions...'

(Birmingham Post )

2.0 out of 5 stars Misleading blurb, 16 Aug 2009
This review is from: Hidden (Paperback)
This is the second book I've read recently for which the blurb does not match the content of the novel. The front cover of 'Hidden' states: 'Left dead by her attacker. Five years later, he knocks on her door.' This is plain wrong. Neither of the protagonist's suspected attackers ever knocks on her door. (Amusingly, I have seen two versions of the cover - one with 'Five years...' and one with 'Six years...')

The back cover blurb describes the book as 'A chilling psychological thriller and a gripping journey into the hidden corners of a young woman's mind.' Again, this is misleading - the book is not a thriller. There is a lot of pseudo-psychology, but this is neither chilling nor gripping in my view.

The back cover blurb goes on to say that the protagonist 'receives a call from the lawyer who helped put her husband in jail. Told that another inmate has confessed to the crime...' Actually this is all given in backstory in the novel itself and so the use of present tense here is also misleading.

A more accurate description of the novel would be along the lines of 'Self-obsessed Maggie Wilson never tires of replaying the same old fragmented memories round and round and round in her head, achieving the quite impressive feat of making a frenzied attack seem dull dull dull, and making the reader wish it had been more successful.'

That being said, the writing was often very good, and I enjoyed the parts about Maggie's life as a student and her relationship with her husband.

5.0 out of 5 stars Hidden gem of a book, 27 Dec 2008
This review is from: Hidden (Paperback)
I was lucky enough to read this book when it first came out. I've never heard of Paul Jaskunas but since reading this have spent my time checking if he's written anything else. This is a beautifully written novel, with gorgeous prose and a driven narrative. The characters are full and rounded. All in all a superbly written book which deserves to be more well known than it is. Love it, love it, love it
