4.0 out of 5 stars A fascinating introduction to a fascinating city, 28 Oct 2003
By A Customer
I bought this book as a precursor to visiting the city, hoping to gain a little insight into the culture of the place. It certainly provided that, but managed to be enjoyable at the same time as being informative.

Sergeant's book centres around the Shanghai of the 20s and 30s, when the city was at the peak of its fame. Like the city itself, the book provides a glimpse of all walks of life. From the eccentricities and snobbishness of the British colonist, to the grinding poverty of the Chinese, via the plight of the White Russian immigrants and the atrocities of the invading Japanese, no stone is left unturned. However the real reason I so enjoyed this book is because it is not a dry history lesson. The author has painstakingly interviewed hundreds of people who actually lived through the Shanghai of this period and like all truly classic writing, she displays the universal through the story of the individual. Rather than reading about an anonymous city, you get the feeling you are experiencing the lives of a large group of wildly differing and empathetically presented individuals, who happened to live in one huge cultural melting pot. Definitely recommended for anyone thinking of going there.
