5.0 out of 5 stars Superb retelling of "The Devil's Wind", 21 May 2005
By C. Salmon Andrew "Andrew Salmon" (Korea) - See all my reviews
(REAL NAME)
A superb work covering in sometimes gory and often heart-wrenching detail, the most notorious event of a fascinating, but almost forgotten episode: The Indian Mutiny - or, if you are Indian, War of Independence - of 1857. This episode is sometimes known more ecovatively as "The Devil's Wind," and this book shows (rather then tells) exactly why that description is so apt.

Ward, an American, uses largely - but not exclusively - British sources, and his narrative is relatively even-handed. The massacres by British forces, such as General Neil, are covered in addition to the more (in)famous massacre at the Cawnpore (Kanpur) gat and the horrific events at the "House of the Ladies" and Cawnpore Well.

For those who want a broad overview of the Indian Mutiny, this book is not it: events such as the siege of Delhi are mentioned barely in passing, and the events leading up to the Mutiny are not covered in great detail. if you want detailed economic or political background, look elsewhere. Nor does Ward's book dwell on the psychology of the perpetrators of heroic or barbaric acts (though the story retells such deeds in abundance)

No, this is history - the story of people caught up in a maelstrom of events. We meet the characters, get to know them and their foibles, and follow them as events unfold - usually to their dooms. The book's strength is the up-close-and-personal description and anecdote: this is living, breathing, bleeding and dying history.

Vivid and very difficult to forget.

5.0 out of 5 stars A gripping and very human account of the mutiny, 16 May 2000
By A Customer
A gripping account which we couldn't put down particularly as much related to our family. Andrew Ward has brought to life a fascinating period in British History in a balanced non-judgemental way. I would thoroughly recommend to anyone interested in 19th century India. One minor correction concerns footnote 597 (pt2) My research would suggest the the youngest son of Hugh Wheeler and Francis Marsden was Charles Eyre Wheeler, my gg grandfather born 1 February 1845.

5.0 out of 5 stars Narrative history at its best, 29 Jan 2006
By A Customer
Without doubt, this is the best narrative history I have ever read. Admittedly it concerns a subject that I find absorbing - the indian mutiny - but having said that, it really is a superb history. Anyone who admires JG Farrell's novel The Siege Of Krishnapur will find this book even better in terms of human interest and versimilltude.
