Product Description

Product Description

This work brings together John Betjeman's poems and prose and Paul Hogarth's paintings about the Church. Together, they demonstrate Betjeman's intimate knowledge of and love for the Church, both High and Low, and also his joy in the comedies and the small details of Church life.

From the Publisher

In this book Betjeman has captured the intimate world of church life, with its architecture, clergy, congregation and ritual. Betjeman's life was infused by a personal love of the Church and his understanding and experience of its architecture and its ritual make him one of the most absorbing guides to aspects of church life. Betjeman wrote a great deal about the Curch throughout his life and much of his best-loved writing is on the subject. Paul Hogarth's sensitivity to architecture and place has made him one of the most popular living artists and here he accompanies Betjeman's words with marvellous evocations of the churches set in churchyards and wider landscapes and of those details within that were so important to Betjeman and which fascinate the observant eye.

5.0 out of 5 stars A must for all Betjeman fans, 29 Jan 2001
By A Customer
This book is one of a series of three, the other two being The Illistrated Poems and The Illustrated Summoned By Bells. As with the other two, the contents are all re-hashes of Betjeman's work, but with added watercolour illustrations to enhance them. A great deal of thought has gone into the content of both the the selected written material and the illustations.

For me, an avid fan who has visited Betjeman's home territory and final resting place at St. Enodoc's Church on many occasions, the sections of prose and watercolours featuring St. Protus and St. Hyacinth Church at Blisland, coupled with those of St. Enodoc's Church at Trebetherick, make it worth buying the book to read these two sections alone.
