The Scottish Colourists are acclaimed as a group of painters of exceptional originality. The strong, emotive colours, fluent brushwork and sense of pattern marked their paintings as different from, and more advanced than, anything seen in Britain before the appearance of the Vorticists in 1914. The text sets out to confirm the reputation of these four painters, and to reassess their work in the context of 20th century British painting.

About the Author

Roger Billcliffe has lived in Glasgow since 1969 when he became a Lecturer in Fine Arts at Glasgow University and Assistant Keeper of the Art Collection there. In 1977 he became keeper of Fine Art at Glasgow Art Gallery before moving to The Fine Art Society as Director in charge of the company’s Scottish galleries in Edinburgh and Glasgow, specialising in twentieth century and contemporary Scottish art.

I thought that this was an excellent book. It provides an ideal introduction to the sometimes quite breathtaking work of this much under-rated group of British {Scottish} artists. It shows the work is not just a lot of colourful and charming pictures of middleclass life from the early part of the twentieth century, but has an importance in its own right that has been overlooked.The text is short enough to be readable, yet provides an introduction to the artistic concerns of the group, and a useful potted history. It manages to combine an artistic history of the four artists who made up this group, with an appreciation of their aims and achievements. The book is well illustrated, in colour, with a varied selection from each of the four, including not only the better known paintings but many less well known. This has the benefit of providing a well rounded and developed summary of the achievements of the group showing the developments, and changes of style over their lifetimes. All in all, I felt that this book, is a useful addition to my collection, featuring as said a well balanced selection of illustrations from all four artists, and an interesting text which provides a fine introduction to the life and work of the group, while steering clear of the heavier, academic style of fine art history and criticism.
