Product Description

Review
a vivid pen-picture of the Labour party in trauma. We are lucky that Dianne Hayter is still there, still on the National Executive Committee, to chronicle the next stage along the road. --Phillip Whitehead, Ham & High (Broadway)

It is however, a key document in understanding what happened in the Labour Party between 1980 and the advent of Tony Blair. It is an honest account of how Labour's right beat the left. --Illtyd Harrington, former deputy chairman of the Greater London Council. Camden New Journal

Product Description

5.0 out of 5 stars Insightful and relevant, 15 Nov 2005
These were turbulent years for the Labour Party: make or break time for a party on the verge of internal combustion. To have the ins and outs of party political machinations revealed by someone who was at the heart of it all gives us an insight into a complex and mysterious world. Through provocative interviews and incisive comment, Dianne Hayter tells the story of how the party of Foot was reborn as the party of Blair. This isn't history, this is current affairs: a must-have for any student of contemporary politics.

5.0 out of 5 stars Where did all the radicals go?, 9 Nov 2005
By A Customer
This fascinating study reveals how 25 years ago the Labour right plotted to recapture the Party.
Led by trades union general secretaries, and meeting secretly (initially in the St Ermins Hotel), these men managed to marshall the numerous, and often mutually-antagonistic, right-wing groupings within the Labour Party. They first managed to halt the migration of MPs to the newly-formed Social Democrats, and then realised that they had also to bring the democratic Left within the tent. They achieved all this through attention to the minutiae of Rule Books and Standing Orders, but were impeded by the conceits (Healey) and laziness (Hattersley) of would-be leaders of the Party.
There's plenty of light-hearted relief in this deftly-written book from the spectacle of the evolution of 1980s left-wingers to Blair-loyalism. More poignantly, a Healey leadership might have given us a Labour government now with the spine to withstand American pressure.
