Product Description

Product Description
A major new GCSE textbook, providing a series of "lessons" in psychology. Each lesson is a self-contained, "bite-sized" explanation of a topic with frequent opportunities for readers to test their understanding by filling in short questionnaires at the end of each section. This also encourages them to asses how the topic may have relevance to their own lives and personal relationships, whilst helping them to apply their knowledge and reinforce the lesson. This causes them to interact with the text and so reach better understanding and retain the information. The book can be read from beginning to end like any other text or can be used in a structured way to simulate the experience of studying at college. Who is it for: adults returning to study and aiming to obtain further qualifications; 16-19 year olds re-taking GCSEs at an FE college or taking it as an addition to A levels in the sixth form; adults studying GCSE psychology at an evening class in an FE college; and anyone with an interest in psychology and who wants to know more about it. Readers can study as individuals or in a group from home, school, college or work. If they aim to take the GCSE qualification they may already have a tutor in a class or they may obtain tuition from an organisation to which the book directs them. Class tutors could be expected to recommend the book as a course text and work through it with their students or use it in a self-study workshop.

About the Author

4.0 out of 5 stars Good support tool, 1 April 2006
By A Customer
This book covers both the AQA and OCR exams. Although all sections are marked as to which examining board it is relevant to, it's a bit fiddly flicking through the book as there will be a lot of irrelevant sections. Taking into account that the book covers both examining boards, there is a lot in it, which is reflected in the price.

All that aside, it is a very useful book, covering everything you need. I particularly liked the exam style questions at the end of the chapters, allowing you to measure your own understanding.

5.0 out of 5 stars Catch Shoesmith's Passion for the Subject, 13 Oct 2006
In her recently published review, Mary Claire Halvorson, Goldsmith's College, University of London wrote "This isn't merely yet another soulless crammer. I liked the way the author engaged with the reader by asking questions as he went along. More importantly, my son liked this too. This ensures the reader is checking themselves to ensure understanding - whoever the reader is and whatever the motive for reading. All in all, this is a succinct and attractively presented textbook. Well worth a look if you are seeking coverage of material within a single volume... you might just catch Shoesmith's clear passion for the subject! My favourite part of the book are the 67 lessons. These are well-written and engaging and underpinned by good pedagogics. These brief chapters explain clearly and in a straightforward manner some difficult concepts which might be confusing for those starting out in this discipline. The book covers all the necessary material for any GCSE psychology course, especially matched to the AQA and OCR syllabus (a separate index is provided for each). TEACHERS OF PSYCHOLOGY WILL FIND IT VALUABLE for ready-to-use lesson materials with all their students. The format includes quick quizzes immediately followed by the answers. For the general reader it is a straightforward, topic-based first step into psychology and the lessons could be read in pretty much any order. The primary readership of this book will be ... students doing psychology exams, mostly at GCSE and A level. My son is doing the latter and his school did not offer GCSE psychology so this book was very helpful by way of an introduction to the discipline. In particular he was having trouble finding an answer in his A level books to a question on Attachment. None of his set books had the information. It was here in Shoesmith - and well explained."

1.0 out of 5 stars Waste of money, 7 Mar 2009
By H. Crawshaw "Psych teacher" (Dorset, England) - See all my reviews
(REAL NAME)
As a teacher of Psychology I found this book very useful. The content and the Exam-Style questions - great. BUT the binding is so poor after just 3 weeks of use the back is broken and pages are beginning to fall out. This is an expensive book and I'll have to replace it within weeks of buying it. Very cross.
