Product Description

Product Description

David Beckham's transfer to Real Madrid was football's worst kept secret. After he moved, it seemed the British press devoted more coverage to the Spanish game than their own. But while Beckham's arrival at Real Madrid captured the world's imagination, in the hands of author Jimmy Burns, this is much more than a book about David Beckham and Real Madrid. It is about how Spain became Europe's most exciting country, a revolution in the world of football; and how this came to be epitomised by the arrival of a sports icon.

About the Author

Jimmy Burns is the author of The Hand of God, a biography of Diego Maradona, and Barca. He also writes for the Financial Times.

4.0 out of 5 stars much more than just a Beckham book, 20 Feb 2007
By James Christie (Perth, Scotland) - See all my reviews
(REAL NAME)
Jimmy Burns is half Spanish, and was brought up in the UK and Spain. His family's politics meant he was hostile to Real Madrid and the Spanish establishment that they represented. Nevertheless he has written a fascinating and fair account of Real's history and their place in modern Spain. I'm no fan of Real Madrid, but after reading the book I am less hostile and judgemental

Beckham is just the hook on which Burns has hung his story. This is not just a commercial device to widen its audience (though it may have that effect). Beckham's arrival in Madrid encapsulated the confusion about what Real Madrid are supposed to be. An embodiment of Spain? A machine for winning trophies? A passion for glory and excellence? A commercial juggernaut?

Of course there's no easy answer, and similar questions could be asked of Europe's other footballing megaclubs, but the story provides revealing and entertaining insights into big business football and today's Spain.

The only criticism I have is that sometimes it is disjointed, and the narrative wanders somewhat from chapter to chapter, rather than flowing smoothly. However, for those of us who love football and Spain (like me!), this is a great read.
