Product Description

Product Description
The reader and I are only interested in the truth. Recklessly generously illustrated. This is the book I've been secretly longing to write. There is so much in my overstuffed life that I've never talked about publicly before. All the things I love and dread are here: objects, photographs, people, letters, ideas, regrets, memories, journeys, being a model in the sixties, a daughter of the regiment, a friend of Dirk Bogarde; things I believe in, people I've met and can't forget; slumming it, lording it, failure and survival. I wanted to write about eyeliner as well as sleeping under shrunken heads in a longhouse; being an honorary New Yorker, death (and why I think about it daily) and how to get thinner fast. To give it structure I have devised a framework which is in fact, My House. I shall show the reader into every room, from front door to attic window, walking through the (colossally) sustained metaphor of my life, answering questions (which I have cunningly put) about all the stuff in the place; my things: me. Why are you photographed with the Dalai Lama? Is this the teddy bear you had on your bed at school? Did you draw this picture of your son? Why did you make these pathetic curtains? Who are you? Do you lie to the press?

About the Author
Joanna Lumley was born in India and grew up in England and the Far East. She started out modeling for Jean Muir and soon went on to become one of Britain's best-loved actresses. Renowned for her roles both on the screen and in the theatre, Joanna has played the part of leggy Purdey in The New Avengers, a Bond Girl in On Her Majesty's Secret Service and perhaps most famously as Patsy Stone in the Bafta Award winning series Absolutely Fabulous. Her first autobiography Stare Back and Smile was published in 1989 and in 1995, Joanna was awarded with an OBE shortly after making the documentary film Girl Friday.

5.0 out of 5 stars A fascinating autobiography with a difference!, 11 Oct 2004
By Iceni Peasant (Norfolk, England) - See all my reviews
(TOP 500 REVIEWER)
I have been a fan of Joanna's for many years and loved the variety of characters she has played, from Purdey to Patsy, and the roles she has taken on....who will ever forget the "Fish Feet" from the "Girl Friday"?? This autobiographical book shows an even richer tapestry of life, all presented in an unique way.

Each chapter is set in a room of Joanna's house, and she writes like she is the host and taking you through each room. As the reader is taken into the rooms Joanna describes items in the room, curtains, her latest DIY projects and the reasons for things being in certain places. Often the objects start off a story from Joanna's life; be it a keepsake from a certain country she has visited or something that just reminded of another time and place.

The book is a real treasure and it's written in a way you can almost hear Joanna say it. It's fresh, lively and very VERY fascinating, and leaves the reader often stunned by the amazing stories she tells from her experiences and the experiences had when meeting certain people.

There are lots of photos in the book....more photos than I've ever seen in an autobiography, with pictures of Joanna from a child to the current day. It truly is a wonderful book, that will make you smile AND make you think about various issues in a whole new light.

4.0 out of 5 stars Quirky, soulful autobiography, 24 Jan 2005
By T. Bently "tbently" (Berkshire, England) - See all my reviews
(TOP 1000 REVIEWER)    (REAL NAME)
Joanna Lumley chooses not to go down the usual biographical route. Instead of charting the progress of her career she instead stages a kind of free-falling description of her life as she tours the rooms of her London house and allows particular objects or photographs to stir memories.

She has a particular gift for storytelling and in describing her childhood. There is a kind of gentle humour throughout which is achieved more by choosing exactly the right word to describe something rather than by jokes. For instance, she imagines a stable of horses as looking "like an equine rugby team".

Less successful are her attempts at travelogue, which seem to take the form of pages culled from her diary. However, overall her technique of darting from subject to subject is enticing as we gain bizarre glimpses into her everyday life (watching "University Challenge" in the kitchen) and her philosophy.

This is the most unshowbizzy of memoirs and will find favour with people who enjoy reading biographies generally rather than fans of Absolutely Fabulous, which receives scant mention.

4.0 out of 5 stars Intriguing, 24 Jun 2007
This review is from: No Room for Secrets (Paperback)
Having read this book I feel new respect for Ms Lumley - and I respected her before. She is many things: an intrepid traveller, unpretentious about everything, hands-on when it comes to supporting inventive projects (the Frogmat stuff is interesting), and evidently an experiencer of paranormal things. I skipped a few pages of travelogue, but generally found her book fascinating, not least because it is devoid of regret and self criticism - how many memoirs are like that? An intriguing insight into her life and her house.
