Amazon.co.uk Review

Jilliane Hoffman's first novel Retribution takes the stock material of the forensic thriller and the woman-in-jeopardy modern Gothic and combines them with an intelligent meditation on justice. When Banting is caught with an eviscerated blonde in the boot of his car, prosecutor Chloe thinks she has got bang to rights a serial killer she and her police allies have been tracking for months. When she realises that he is the man who raped her and left her for dead twelve years earlier, it only makes her more certain--and more determined to send him to his death and not stand down from a trial in which she cannot possibly be objective. Yet nothing is quite as it seems.

Hoffman is entirely on top of both the small telling details from which a convincing criminal case is built up and the combination of intense concentration and deep personal damage that Chloe brings to her work and to surviving; she makes depression and stress as much a matter of white-knuckle excitement as more obvious dangers. This is an intelligent thriller that makes no pretence at having final answers to the matters of life and death that it raises. --Roz Kaveney

Review

This American former prosecutor's crime thriller is superlative and deserves to have sold for "unprecedented sums throughout the world". A law student is raped and tortured in her own New York apartment by a masked man. Still in emotional hell 12 years later with her looks and name disguised so the perpetrator - whoever he is - cannot track her down, she has become one of the state prosecutors in Florida and faces in court a psycho arrested for the most gruesome serial killings of women. Immediately she recognises his voice. The plot storms along from peaks of terror to resoluteness to anguished nightmare, with just enough love interest to give moments of respite from the macabre. A dream of a debut thriller.

5.0 out of 5 stars High quality debut thriller, 3 Sep 2007
By OEJ (England) - See all my reviews
(TOP 100 REVIEWER)
In this critically acclaimed bestselling first novel by Jilliane Hoffman, Miami State Attorney Chloe "C.J." Townsend helps track down the sadistic serial murderer of at least nine women. But the case turns personal, and Chloe soon finds that she must face her own frightening past to catch a killer - and make a choice between justice and retribution. It's a story based on the nightmare experiences of a young woman previously living in New York and on the verge of becoming a lawyer - she has a boyfriend who is already rich and successful whom she expects to marry. After a night out she returns to her apartment and is brutally raped. Not unexpectedly this has a profound effect on her life and her relationships, particularly as her rapist makes himself known to her some time afterwards. This triggers a reaction and she moves away from New York.

The pace of the novel is impressive resulting in a very readable thriller set against a court background. Some of the acronyms and the American system of justice may cause English readers some confusion but this is inevitable and should not detract from the power of the story. It is well written, particularly in respect of dialogue, court procedure and investigative methods. It graphically portrays the trauma of rape and its consequences and your sympathies are with Chloe/CJ. The court scenes and the investigation are described particularly well.

The plot is ingenious - the rape victim who after 12 years gets the opportunity for revenge. A whodunit with a twist at the end with clues placed strategically along the way. Women identify easily with a rape victim, but men will find this just as enjoyable a read as it is a relatively gender-neutral writing style. There are many very interesting psychological factors and interplays between victim, oppressor and therapist.

I had been reading several books that year (2004) which involved rape and revenge themes, and Retribution is comfortably at or near the top of the list. Very highly recommended - Jilliane Hoffman should be a name to watch out for in the future; regrettably the sequel to this debut novel - LAST WITNESS - didn't live up to my high expectation.

4.0 out of 5 stars A Wonderful Debut, 24 Jun 2004

(TOP 500 REVIEWER)
After beautiful young law student Chloe Lawson is brutally raped and horribly disfigured then left for dead in her bed by a masked intruder, she drops out of her life in New York City. She begins to live in terror of a repeat attack. The opening few scenes of this gripping legal thriller are shocking in their violence but they set Chloe's victim mentality up perfectly.

We then jump forward 12 years to Miami, Florida where Chloe has reinvented herself as C.J. Townsend, an Assistant State Attorney, and a darn good one at that. She is working on a serial killer case, currently 11 victims strong, that has suddenly broken wide open with a suspect in custody. C.J. will be prosecuting and is looking forward to the challenge. When she meets the suspect in court, she realises that he's the man who raped her 12 years ago and suddenly her case and her life spins out of control once again.

It's a serial killer story, but it's more. And it's more than just a legal thriller. There is a fascinating moral and ethical dilemma that a rape victim is placed in when she is unexpectedly given her chance at revenge. The question is, will she take it? This book was satisfying on many levels, but mainly because it forced me to think while I was being entertained. This is a wonderful debut by Jilliane Hoffman.

When I read reviews that said this book left Grisham standing, I didnt believe it. I could not put this book down! Hoffman makes Grisham look boring! I cannot wait for her next book.
