Changed my life, 10 Jun 2007
I'll just give you my story - I'm 28, I live in Limerick in Ireland, and while training for a half marathon in Dublin I began to get chest pains.. The doctor checked me out, decided to send me to hospital to get it checked out, and ultimately a few months later I went for an angiogram, which gave me the all-clear - it wasn't my heart, it was muscular. In the time that I had between going to the doctor, and going for the angiogram, I decided I'd eat as healthly as possible, and try and lose some weight (I was about 2 stone overweight, even with training - due to not eating right).. where to start? I had little idea of how to eat healthly, and how it would affect my body (or my heart in this case). By following this book, I was able to eat as much as I liked, and lose two stone, without training. I used other books to broaden my knowledge about food, but this was the main book I used, and I came across it by chance on the shelf in a bookshop as somewhere to start. I'm training now regularly, and eating right, and feel a lot better for it.
The book I have is very slightly different, Tom Monte is also an author, but it's much the same. Fleming himself is a nucleur cardiologist. The first half of the book explains how weight is gained, inflammation, and describes 12 risk factors.. cholesterol, triglycerides, excess weight, homocysteine, antioxidants, exercise, fibrinogen, growth factors, cytokines and leukotrienes, complement, bacteria, protecting your arteries. Some case studies are given of work he carried out with his own patients with results. The second half of the book deals with diet.. he gives a two-phase plan in how to reverse inflammation, and lose weight. Follow this, and your body will never feel the same. Plans and recipes are given at the end.
If you have a heart condition, or any other, or are serious about wanting to lose weight, you can't go wrong with this.
Cons with this book? In my opinion, his writing is at times a bit sensationalist and repetitive, but it would be a boring read otherwise.
It's not a very large book, but this makes it easy to read. After reading this, you'd have a very good idea of what supplementary material you'd need.
To sum up - If you know little about diet and how it affects your heart/life, I'd definitely recommend buying this book, it changed my life in how I look at food. It's not the same as other diet books, it doesn't recommend a little of everything, to cut down on some stuff, and confuse you - phase 1 is only fruit and vegetables and the right amounts to eat (phase 2 then expands on this, but is still very restrictive). But it's not difficult to follow because you can basically eat as many as you want and always feel reasonably full - you might be surprised at how many vegetables are out there! Follow this book seriously, and you'll be writing a good review up here too..
