You know what to expect by now. The format is a sure fire winner. Wainwright's drawings are magnificent as ever and his love of the fells is evident.

From the highest point of Grasmoor, at 2791 ft to the more accessable but smaller Catbells there is much to enjoy here for both the serious walkers and the afternoon strollers.

The story of the Bishop of Barf and the cleric enthralls and presents a daring challenge should you be either fit or drunk enough. A large bolder on the side of Barf which has been whitewashed for many years now but requires periodic re painting.

Some of the best ridge walks in the whole district can be found in the North West. Grisedale Pike, Hopegill Head and Whiteside or Scar Crags, Sail, Eel Crag and Grasmoor are both magnificent walks with a detour to Wandope essential for the peak bagger.

The region also boasts the easiest major climb in the district. By starting on the Honister Pass you can reach the top of Dale Head 2400 ft in under an hour. Hindsgarth and Robinson can be reached reasonably comfortably from there.

There are also a couple of less high walks if you explore the north of the region with the Lord's Seat round never troubling 2,000 ft but making a nice day's walk with fine views to the North and West

Less crowded than other areas and as ever Mr Wainwright makes an acerbic companion. Somewhere out there the one millionth Wainwright was one of these books with a prize to meet MR Wainwright. The book was identified by an original signature on the fly leaf. I believe this prize was never claimed and it won't be now.
