This, the first of Wainwright's classic Guides to England's beautiful Lake District, is a must for any potential visitor. Hugely entertaining as pocket-sized works of literature, art and cartography the Guides are as enjoyable when read at home by the fireside as when catching ones breath up a mountain path.

In painstaking detail the reader is given an overview of the area and then taken step by step up the 35 peaks (or fells) covered by this volume. The grandest Helvellyn is afforded 26 carefully crafted pages covering 14 routes up or down. That via Striding Edge is: 'The best way of all, well known, popular, and often densely populated in summer. The big attraction is an airy rock ridge, very fine indeed. Good path throughout.' In mist he firmly advises on the safest routes and makes waspish comments about those who despoil the hills. Rather than the technical detail of traditional maps his maps portray the landscape as the walker will view it. They include fine detail and advice which enables even the novice to navigate safely.

The variations of route, the tantalising illustrations and Wainwright's infectious enthusiasm make planning a walk as great a delight as its eventual execution. Those intrigued by the quirky, obsessive and sometimes curmudgeonly dreamer of an author could do worse than to read Hunter Davies's 'Wainwright - The Biography.' For most of us though, the cult of Wainwright is all about a mutual love and respect for these fells. This Guide is an aid to the enjoyment of Lakeland as essential as a compass or a water bottle.
