5.0 out of 5 stars For the armchair Egyptologist, 28 Dec 2005
By Cyberwitch (Cranbrook, Kent) - See all my reviews
This review is from: A God Against the Gods (Hardcover)
If you like your Egyptology to be character-based and of necessity 90% speculation, then this is a great read. I first read the book 30 years ago and had been trying to find it again ever since (I forgot the name of the author) so it's a welcome reunion with old friends for me. It is a superb recreation of what life might have been like in pharoahonic times and the first time around it kindled in me a lifelong interest in Akhenaten/Amenhotep IV which has never waned. It is colourful and extremely well researched and written, as is the sequel, "Return to Thebes". Highly recommended.

5.0 out of 5 stars Intriguing historical fiction, 19 Aug 2003
By Lorraine Rose (Coventry, West Midlands United Kingdom) - See all my reviews
This review is from: A God Against the Gods (Hardcover)
I first read this book some years ago and was fascinated by it and its sequal 'Return to Thebes'. A work of historical fiction, it focuses on the story of Akhanaten and his court, including such characters as Nefertiti, Smenkhare, Aye, Seti and Tiye. The book is written in a diary format, with entries by each of the principal characters, and the story unfolds through each individual's perspective. This is a story of mystery and madness in the Egyptian court of the 18th dynasty. It's a tale that will leave the reader intrigued and eager to learn more about perhaps the strangest and most interesting pharaoh.
