Product Description
Synopsis
Recent figures estimate that one in ten people suffers from a fear of flying. Ironically, this very mode of transport is becoming an everyday means of travel for many, and an essential part of our work and personal lives. 'Conquering Your Fear of Flying' is a positive and ultimately empowering book to help people overcome what is one of the most prevalent fears in today's fast-moving world, and one which often means pure terror for the sufferer. Dr Maeve Byrne Crangle examines and confronts the many types of anxiety involved with flying and lays out a plan to help conquer these apprehensions, which can often mean pure terror for the sufferer. She outlines a programme of self-management, showing how to use stress management techniques to cope and defuse our anxieties before and during flights. Also included are chapters on basic aerodynamics, explanations of the many engine noise changes during the flight, turbulence, and how flight crews are selected and trained for emergencies. Air travel remains statistically safer than crossing the road, and flying has been proven to be twenty-five times safer than driving your own car.

'Conquering Your Fear of Flying' is the book to convince even the most faint-hearted flyers of these facts, and to help them towards a happy and fearless future with air travel.

2.0 out of 5 stars Not for me, 9 Jun 2004
I have had a fear of flying since I first flew at the age of 21. Depite this, I have continued flying but still find it very distressing. I decided that I needed to know more about the aircraft itself to convince me it was a safe method of travel.
So, I bought this book to find some reassurance that all those 'scary' noises on the plane are technical things that were completely normal.
Unfortunately, this book addresses the technical workings of a plane quite briefly and mentions them only in passing which was rather disappointing. It does explain that others have the same fears as me but I guess I already knew that.
At least half of the book gives you relaxation techniques to help you deal with the fear which is great if you have never been taught any of the techniques and are happy to practice them on a regular basis, so you can go into auto pilot (excuse the pun)when fear is about to hit you.
Overall, this book did not help my fear and I put it down half way through when I came to the 'dealing with fear' section. I needed a book that explained the basic technical workings of a plane (obviously in plain English)in order to explain the noises that create awful thoughts and pictures in my mind of what is going on.

5.0 out of 5 stars Honesty, 2 Oct 2004
I read this book and cannot agree with the review where the person wants Engine Noises. An Airline Engineer's book would describe that adequately, not a book written by an Aviation Psychologist. I read this book because it highlighted the phobias that I suffer from and now I know that they are totally reservible. I also know that a book cannot "cure" me but it can point me in the correct direction. Dr Byrne Crangle is a famous Irish Psychologist and I have heard her on radio through the internet while living in Madrid and her enthusium for helping people conquer this fear is very powerful. I believe she has a second edition out now as her first book was a sell out, which speaks for itself. After reading her comments and true life events in this book, I am going to get the second edition as I know that I am not alone anymore and there is plenty of help available.
