Product Description

Product Description

This title Explains The 81 Scoring Hands And Rules Governing The Official Rules Of Mahjong Which Were Standardised In 2002.

From the Publisher

The new international rules are becoming the standard for Mahjong players everywhere. Now everyone can stay ahead of the game with DB Pritchard's The New Mahjong.

This ancient game has entranced people right across the globe for centuries. It's in vogue now more than ever before as growing numbers of people wake up to the intellectual challenge Mahjong poses. Until recently, it has been played in scores of different ways throughout the world but all that is set to change. The Chinese government recently declared Mahjong to be an official sport, simplifying the rules and standardising the game throughout the country. These have been adopted as the official rules for all future international events. Previous forms of the game will inevitably give way to this, the new Mahjong standard, bringing players together where once the variations divided them.

This book satisfies beginners and accomplished players alike with clear descriptions of each phase of play, thorough instructions for the complete beginner, every one of the 81 winning hands clearly presented and fully illustrated, a guide to scoring and sample hands for practice.

Pritchard, a leading international games authority, brings Mahjong right into the 21st century. It is essential reading for players everywhere. It's time to play the new Mahjong.

2.0 out of 5 stars It's no Millington, 8 April 2007
By Nicholas Seeber - See all my reviews
(REAL NAME)
The premise for this book is clear - to introduce 'the new mah jong' as codified by the Chinese Government in 1998 and used internationally in 2002. However, the dry and uninspiring text does nothing to sell the new rules - which seem to have ripped out the elegant simplicity of the traditional game and replaced it with tedious rote-learning.

As a substitute, I would highly recommend Alan D Millington's 'Complete Book of Mah Jongg' for a definitive introduction to the traditional Chinese rules, strategy and philosophy of this fascinating and little-known game.

4.0 out of 5 stars Indispensable resource, 14 May 2008
By Dwight Dekeyser "Dwight in DC" (Washington, DC USA) - See all my reviews
(REAL NAME)
The previous review is partially correct but for the most is off-the-mark. A. D. Millington's book, "Complete Book of Mah-Jongg" is the ultimate authority on Classic Chinese mahjong. It is an elegant explanation of an intricate and arcane game. D. B. Prithard's book, "The New Mah Jong" is essentially a graphic codification of the Official Chinese rules of 1998. The two books are for two different set of rules; in this context any comparison is irrelevant. Prithard's book is dry but it is also concise and clear. At one time, it was the ONLY book to address the Official Chinese rules. Sadly, both books are unavailable in the United States.
