5.0 out of 5 stars An eye-opener of a book, 11 Oct 2006
By Miland Joshi (Birmingham, UK) - See all my reviews
The former American President writes about the interaction between his faith and American politics. It is enlightening but sobering to see how fundamentalist Christianity has imposed the worst aspects of its attitude on American domestic and foreign policy. Belligerency abroad, a disregard for the environment or the poor (foreign or domestic), a lack of respect for human rights and a lack of respect for human life inherent in the advocacy of the death penalty are all among the betrayal of American ideals that this fundamentalist attitude has helped to bring about. Yet Carter ends on a gracious note, saying that Americans can still renew their commitment to their own ideals. May it be so, and soon, else the damage that has already occurred to America's reputation could become much worse.
