Excellent little guide to the history of the red kite, 12 Jun 2000
By A Customer
This excellent little guide clearly and concisely describes how comon and popular this impressive hawk was in previous centuries, including several quotes from Shakespeare. The author then describes the reasons for its persecution and near extinction, how it managed to survive in remote areas of Mid-Wales and the heroic efforts of a few dedicated bird-lovers to save the red kite from extinction. How easily humans can destroy a wild creature through ignorance and stupidity makes sober reading, but is an excellent study for school projects and anyone who cares about the environment. Two thirds of the book is dedicated to the red kite's story, the final third describes the small villages and hamlets in the region where the bird is found, which is a useful tourist guide and includes many interesting facts. Amongst the text are a number of impressive photographs of the red kite and the areas in which it can be spotted. The book finishes with useful appendices - notes and references from the chapters, bibliography for further reading, a list of the photographs and an index of all the places and bird terms mentioned in the text. Well worth a look, and definately one for the bird-lover, nature-lover and anyone with an interest in the countryside.
