4.0 out of 5 stars Good for interested beginners, 15 Aug 2005
By T. Bennett "Tom" (London, England) - See all my reviews
(REAL NAME)
Not the definitive guide - but not pretending to be either - The Pocket Watch Handbook offers enough information to whet the appetite of the complete beginner and yet it still contains enough to be of interest to the more expert reader.

Intelligently written, thoroughly readable and evidently well-researched, it contains clear diagrams to support the theory of watchmaking and just enough black-and-white photographs to support the text (the lack of colour doesn't detract, as this book is more technical than coffee table).

The only drawback for me is that it touches on most aspects of the subject but then leaves you with unanswered questions, and some are pretty fundamental ones too. Where's the section on casemakers, for example, or the definitive reference pages I expected on British & Foreign hallmarks (you get half a page of the most basic information, without date letters)? And, for those of you who buy-and-sell, it's not sufficiently up-to-date to give anyone any real idea of current prices.

That aside, it's well worth the money and is as good a read as it is a reference. If you're interested in pocket watches, as more than pretty objects or an investment, and you haven't read up on them yet, I'd recommend you start off your library by buying this one.
