Product Description

Product Description

Talented cross-stitch designer Barbara Hammet has carefully researched and re-worked the look of embroidery of the period to create this stunning collection of projects for today's cross stitcher. Every project has been carefully researched, and Barbara reveals the historical inspiration behind each piece of work. Designs feature the elaborate depiction of flowers, plants and animals, and the intricate scroll- and latticework favoured at the time. Much inspiration has been derived from the textiles, clothes and accessories of the day, while further decorative touches such as pearl beads and blackwork add further touches of authenticity.

About the Author

Barbara Hammet began her career teaching arts and crafts, and history of art. Embroidery allowed her to combine this with her interest in the colours and textures of fabrics and threads. She runs her own design business, Wessex Embroidery Collection, designing and selling kits based on historic designs. This is her fourth book to be published by David & Charles, after The Art of William Morris, Art Nouveau Cross Stitch and Celtic Art in Cross Stitch. Barbara lives in Winchester.

5.0 out of 5 stars The cover is what you get! , 3 Oct 2008
By Ruth B. (Netherlands) - See all my reviews
The front cover of this book gives a very good idea of the sort of designs you will find inside of this book. As I loved the cover, I am delighted with the designs found inside. This book is a rare jewel jam-packed with lovely bright, colourful and most of all original ideas!

This book really does stand out! It is different from the average cross stitch book. You can use most designs for your own purposes. For a change this book is not full of book marks, napkins, side table cloths and tea pot cosies, which I can't like as I'm only 30 and don't want to be surrounded by objects that make me feel an old woman. It does contain many lovely pictures for framing (which you could use for pillows also), cushions (the ones at the top on the front cover are 38 cm in diameter), a very unusual fire screen, a book cover, nice little coasters and a bell cord for if you're slightly over 30. At the back and throughout the book are suggestions on how to use a collection of pretty patterns for edges or details from larger pieces for small objects or cards.

I have come to the conclusion that I tend to like books from this publisher: David and Charles (D & C). Another book from them, Antique Samplers in Cross Stitch by Jane Greenoff, toghether with this title by Barbara Hammet is my favorite. For that book also counts: the cover gives a good idea about the contents!

5.0 out of 5 stars Beautiful!, 29 Jan 2009
A beautiful book with some gorgeous ideas. It makes a change to find a cross stitch book that is not "twee" and "cute". I would actually like to see these designs in my home!
