Product Description

Product Description

Beginners recognize that they need to acquire basic painting skills - but at the same time they are eager to produce a finished painting that they can hang on their walls. This popular 'weekend' formula allows them to do just that - to build skills gradually and produce an attractive, frameable painting in a limited amount of time. The author starts by introducing the materials required for painting watercolour landscapes, then leads readers through a series of initial techniques designed to provide a basic grounding in the skills required for this subject area. This instruction is followed by eight short courses for painting a range of popular landscape subjects: skies and clouds; water; moutains and lakes; trees and foliage; buildings and textures; reflections in the landscape; winter landscapes; summer landscapes. Each course starts with practice exercises to be completed on the Saturday - readers are then ready to complete the full watercolour painting on the Sunday. Clear instructions accompany step-by-step photographs throughout, and technical information is given in special feature boxes.

5.0 out of 5 stars A perfect tutorial, 12 Mar 2008
By Derek Hill (Sydney, Australia) - See all my reviews
(REAL NAME)
This book will give you all the confidence you need to paint watercolours, even if you've never picked up a brush before. In this easy to read book, Frank Halliday takes you right from first principles to producing your first watercolours, in a series of weekend projects. He makes it so easy, I was producing recognisable pictures on my first ever attempt.

Frank's instructional style is lucid and entertaining and the book's chapters lead you through painting tools and pre-requisites, picture composition, linear and aerial perspective, colour mixing, and many different techiques for applying paint to paper.

Frank demonstrates how he achieves those professional effects that make a picture stand out. His skies are particularly dramatic, and now I can do them too!

A first rate book, well-produced on good-quality paper. It's worth the money for the pictures alone. I can't think that you'd want any other if you want to get off the ground with watercolours.
