5.0 out of 5 stars Massive listings section and good history, 11 Nov 2003
The book is split in two. First there is a very well written 100 page history of castles. Then there are listings of over 1300 castles! These are listed separately for England, Ireland, Scotland and Wales. It's a shame there is no map of where the castles are but there is a cross reference by county allowing you to narrow down your search and each entry does have an OS grid reference. Entries probably average around 200 words each, the more interesting ones up to 500 words. Information varies but usually includes any significant history and an indication to the current state of the castle. There are also around 200 colour photos (some full page - 11'x8') and some B&W plans. There are no details as to opening times or entry charges. Overall highly recommended both as a reference book and simply as an interesting read. Excellent value at £15 and I think it's probably quite a bit less on Amazon.
