not for the beginner, 5 April 2009
This is a beautiful collection of cross stitch embroidery charts and ideas which are perfect for anyone with an interest in mythology. As with any collection of patterns not all of them will appeal to every person, and I have my favourites (and those that I dislike).
There are two reasons why I believe this is not the beginners:
- firstly, many of the patterns within the book contain fractional stitches;
- secondly, there is a very brief techniques guide at the back of the book (four pages) which obviously it assumes that the user has some prior knowledge of cross stitching.
I have a personal problem with the "stitching techniques" in that it says use aida or evenweave; it isn't the recommendation of the material I have a problem with (though I would recommend evenweave to anyone when using a pattern involving fractional stitches), it is the description of how to use evenweave. The diagrams demonstrating the stitches worked on evenweave show a 2 x 2 square being used. I can assure you, as a frequent user of evenweave, it is used on a 3 x 3 basis, and is much easier to use than many people think (especially when dealing with fractional stitches).
Included in the patterns are unicorns, princesses, dragons, wizards, castles, angels, and cherubs, as well as an oriental section (including Goddess, dragon and motifs), and a section on the deep (and beautiful dolphins cross stitch, a Poseidon, and motifs). The motifs can be used to make up several patterns of their own, several of them such as the full moon, witch on broomstick, black cat, etc, would come in very handy towards Halloween; just like the little fish motifs with seahorses and fish would come in useful if the person in question requires something for the fish fancier in the family.
There is also a wonderful zodiac cross stitch which will keep the most enthusiastic cross stitcher enthralled for weeks if not months.
All in all a wonderful book and a great addition to any cross stitchers collection.

Bought for my daughter; this book is wonderful. Very clear and easy to understand with some enchanting designs.
Also includes a section on stitching techniques which she found helpful.
Highly reccommended.
