5.0 out of 5 stars Outstanding example in an excellent series of books, 3 Feb 2002
By Tk Clarke "terryclarke3" (UK) - See all my reviews
(REAL NAME)
I have several of these excellent '55 series' books, the subjects of which I was at least familiar with but it was in the ordering of the W Eugene Smith edition that I came across Eugene Richards. Given the price of these titles you just cannot lose so added it to my order - and what a revelation.

The images are superb but it is the marrying of the text with the images that really lift this particular book above many that I have bought or read in the past. A brief essay written in a very abstract but personal style opens up the man to the reader, the journey through 55 examples of his life's work with equally poetic attendant text is truly inspirational. At several points I was almost moved to tears. The fact that this journey ends at the closing of the twentieth century just adds to the resonance.

5.0 out of 5 stars Tender, heartrending images, 20 Jun 2001
By A Customer
This is my first experience of the Phaidon 55 series but I've already ordered more. The price, size and format make them very accessible. The book feels good and the quality of reproduction is impressive. A good range of tones, blacks and whites and no bleed through from the back of the page. There are a few pictures spread across two pages which are broken up by the fold. Other pictures seem too small but if you consider the books as an introduction to a photographer then you may want to seek out more of their work.

Eugene Richards photographs are truly moving as is his story. It should be easy to make miserable photos of a miserable subjects but these really involve the viewer. There are heartbreaking images and others that bring about a real sense of anger, panic or compassion. Enough to move the viewer to some action rather than detached, voyeuristic pity. I found myself drawn in by Richards proximity to his subjects and the tenderness of his view.

Richards has suffered in his pursuit of these images. He also seems to share the guilt of Don McCullin with regard to being able to walk away from the situations the subjects are trapped in. Photographers should ask themselves if they could have taken these pictures. I doubt it.

2.0 out of 5 stars Curate's Egg, 24 April 2009
Well, on the plus side the pictures are beautifully reproduced, and the volume, though small, has a feel of quality about it.
On the negative side, the photographs are unrelentingly grim (those who are seasoned pros will undoubtedly already know this of Mr Richards, but I doubt they are the target audience for Phaidon 55's). Don't get it if you're after a few nice shots - its difficult viewing from beginning to end.
The other problem is the style of the text which accompanies the photographs. This is amongst the most pretentious things I have ever read, so much so that its almost commical.
