Product Description

Product Description
Bridging the divide between art and journalism, Magnum photographer Luc Delahaye presents 144 images taken on a winter journey to the north of Russia, recording a nation in a state of moral and physical collapse. The photographs are poetic - simultaneously terrifying, exciting, intimate and moving - despite recording sad subject matter.

5.0 out of 5 stars A powerful work of the first order., 19 Sep 2003
Winterreise is a melancholy road story. Luc Delahaye, photographer and storyteller, travels in winter across the dark landscape of Russia and looks into the private face of the country's moral and social crisis. Invited into the homes and lives of ordinary people, he has created an intimate, moving and revealing portrait of a harsh land, where he finds beauty and sadness in equal measure.

5.0 out of 5 stars A stunning, heartbreaking, highly emotive work of art, 15 Jan 2001
By A Customer
I was completely taken aback by the beauty and overpowering sadness of this book. It is one of the best books I have ever read on any subject per se. A stunning set of photographs. Not an easy book to read due to the subject matter, but this is the work of a master photographer/journalist.

With the exception of short paragraphs on the covers, there is no text. My only criticism is that I would have liked some form of a textual introduction or a background of the trip by the photographer.

Each and every photograph hits the mark; there are no duds. Atmosphere permeates every picture, the vast majority, if not all of which look as if they were shot using only available light. The environments in which the photos were taken couldn't have been more drab and forsaken; but the book is awash with beautiful muted colour.

I buy large quantities of books, but this one really stands out. Well done Luc Delahaye.

5.0 out of 5 stars An object lesson in 'available light' photography., 28 May 2001
By A Customer
Using only a Leica and Fuji 400 consumer print film Luc Delahaye has broken a lot of 'rules' regarding sharp focus , blur and handheld camera shake. I cannot detect the use of flash anywhere in this books 144 photographs. Good! What he has gifted to us is an astonishing use of available light and colour, shadow and texture to illuminate the despair and hopelessness and endless fatigue of life in this economically collapsed region of northern Russia during one of its bitter winters. Some may find this 'Slice of life' too much to swallow, too full of the grit and grime of depressed lives and squalid environments, but Luc Delahaye has managed to present a photographic document that does'nt judge or pity or undermine his subjects. Some may feel this book 'knocks' modern Russian society but I feel that most societies have similar problems with poverty, alcoholism, squalor and unemployment that lie just beneath the surface. Thank goodness for a photographer who leaves the tripods, lighting rigs and digital effects and other paraphenalia at home so we can just 'see' more simply.
