Having joint-authored this book - first published in 1983 - I frequently use it as a first source of information in my business as a map dealer and I am often surprised as to how much obscure detail we managed to pack into it. After such a long time since it's first publication I often wonder where we managed to find the details as it seems to be much more difficult to do so nowadays!

I cannot agree with a previous review. This is a comprehensive and well researched book which is the seminal book on maps and the first book you come across when entering the Map Room in the Royal Geographical Society. This is a must for anyone interested in or collecting old maps.

This has been my first book on antique maps and I could hardy have had a better one. Now I have a lot of books on maps, a lot of them very good, but this continues to be a great starting point for information.
