Practical approach - makes it invaluable for amateur theatre, 15 Oct 2000
By A Customer
The author of this book, Michael McCaffery, manages to outline the basics of play directing in 120 pages (including a huge amount of pictures), not going into too much detail or theory. This rather practical approach makes the book enjoyable to read and especially useful for directors in amateur theatre. McCaffery introduces practically every aspect of the trade a director will be confronted with: preparation, budget, pre-rehearsal work, rehearsals, casting etc., but also includes information on directing period plays or musical theatre. Throughout, the book is written in a very comprehensive and accessible style, and McCaffey has also included many pictures and diagrams to illustrate the different points he makes. Being a beginning amateur director myself, I find this book invaluable, and shall always return to it to re-read certain chapters or look up various aspects. Wrapping up, I would recommend this book to every beginning director in amateur theatre.

great for beginners but rather brief!, 2 Feb 2003

This was the first book on directing that I have read, I am only 15 but I still found this a bit basic for my needs, this book addresses everything concisely. Although it answered most of the questions I still found myself asking 'well what if...' and wishing that Michael McCaffery had developed some of the points he was making more. I have always rated the books I have read very highly but I think that the title is misleading, do not read this book expecting it to be a manual for professional directing but expect it to be manual for the amateur directors out there. Even though 128 pages seems long, their are a lot of full page pictures, which although they help mean that their is much less text than you might expect. The book does answer practically all the questions you would want to know about directing and the book does lead you through the process step by step. If you are a beginner thinking about directing your own play then this is the book you need, it will not overload you with un-nessiccary information, and introduces you gently into the time consuming and often puzzling world that is directing.
