3.0 out of 5 stars Gripping, 21 Jul 2006

This review is from: De Sade's Valet (Paperback)
Georges Latour (whose existence is historical fact it seems, I confess I didn't bother to check) is incapable of feeling pain, and sets out on a quest unlike most: to find the seat of pain in the human body, with the ultimate end to be able to feel pain too.

A Bildungsroman with a twist so to speak, and Georges Latour definitely has some twists in his mind (you wouldn't want to have met him on a dark night in a lonely street in Paris). Before his quest comes to an end he meets a number of colourful characters, and travels the length and breadth of France but end it does, and the insights Latour acquires are not as he (or I) expected.

The language is as sparse as its' protagonist, and all in all I found this a satisfying, thought-provoking book.

5.0 out of 5 stars It is pre-revolutionary France and a killer stalks Paris..., 3 Nov 2000
By A Customer
The police stand powerless because they find no motive. The murders seem extremely well planned and with one gruesome thing in common; each of the victims' bodies is found without it's head. The decapitations were performed with such anatomical precision, police chief inspector Ramon believes they could only have been done by a surgeon. But unlike most psychological thrillers, "De Sade's Valet" is by no means a 'Who dunnit?' The reader knows exactly who has done it and who will continue to do it untill he gets through his namesake list of eight persons. The murderer is Latour, the physically grotesque, mentally brilliant and arguably insane son of the much hated moneylender Bou-Bou -- himself born with the inability to fee pain. It is his bizarre life story we follow; from his conception(his mother is raped by an escaped prisoner) to his senility in the crazy house, Charenton. Woven from the cloth of several perspectives, we struggle with many questions. Is Latour straight out horrible we wonder? Or is he a brilliant, avenging angel? Why do we route so happily for him to evade capture, even feeling badly ourselves when he suffers emotional and physical pain we have been told he himself can not feel? Crafted with eloquence and allegory, "DeSade's Valet" is brilliant read. It is a shocking, disturbing yet magnificant story with deep insights into the complex psychological machinations of the mind in relation to science, anatomy and behavior. A MUST READ!
