5.0 out of 5 stars A fascinating book about the power of Celtic seership...., 23 Aug 2000
By A Customer
It is not often to see such a well-presented and thoughtful anthology about the power of Celtic visionaries. John and Caitlin Matthrews have presented us with a fascinating array of subjects about seership---precognitive dreams, the prophecies of Merlin, the ancient Ogham alphabet, the Silver Bough, and more. Contributing authors range from antiquarians to modern writers in our own time....Particularily outstanding is the chapter on "The Spells of Women" by Caitlin Matthews, addressing often-neglected themes that need to be addressed. If you have ever wanted to learn more about the vatic tradition of the Celts, this is an introduction that will open doorways to a new way of perceiving the early Celts and their history. Clearly, a challenge worth trying, and a "thank you" to John and Caitlin Matthews for presenting us with this thoughtful book on the often over-romanticized, misunderstood, or ignored seership aspects of the Celts---a subject that can make many uncomfortable in our modern, rationalist age. Although not an academic study per se, this book certainly has value nonetheless; Seership is an important part of religious and spiritual experience, and a new area of Religious Studies that has been opening up today. Although a popular book, this book may serve as an important introduction to the overall concept of Celtic seership for all......

5.0 out of 5 stars A Vision of Magic, 10 Oct 2003
John Matthews has done the Celtic community a great service in assembling and editing this third book of the series from Blandford. The sutitle of The Celtic Seer’s Source Book is Vision and Magic in the Druid Tradition and that pretty well explains the contents of the book. Part one is concerned with vision and seership among the Bards and Druids and features articles about precognitive dreams in Celtic legends, prediciting the future from the flights of birds, the divination of the ‘thumb of knowledge’ and many other wonderful essays which extensively quote ancient texts or the works of respected Celtic scholars. Part two contains four articles on the Ogham including Ogham by R.A.S. Macalister, a document that is very difficult to find anywhere but in such a collection. Much of the ancient texts contained prophetic poetry and some of these are included in the part three of The Celtic Seers’ Source Book. No one who seriously wishes to learn authentic Celtic traditions should be without this book.
