I think my main issue with this book is the terrible quality of the artwork. It isn't close to a professional level, and is riddled with anatomy and inking errors.

The information contained in this book could easily be found in online tutorials on art sites, and it does very little to expand upon basic methods (other than teaching them entirely incorrectly). And for a start, it contains surprisingly little information in digital art.

The book is riddled with wrong information. Supposedly "advanced" lineart preparation teaches the wonder of the brightness/contrast controls and the magic wand, creating surprisingly chunky ugly lineart. It mentions none of the more suitable functions on photoshop for doing this, such as levels. And it suggests the novice trick of using the magic wand to remove white space, rather than channels.

The colouring section itself is reasonably dire as well. It covers the very basics of photoshop's layer system and the very obvious tools, but as well as pretty much every other book I've seen. There is no mention about colour theory and it doesn't explain lighting much either. If you have zero knowledge of photoshop, it might be useful, but it isn't going to take long to grow out of.

As for the tone section, it is just another big example of the creators ineptness. Much of the screentone pictures look cluttered and they don't teach much about when to use tone, adding high-lights to it and the like. It just isn't there. The section is filled with poor pictures and useless filler text.

If you want to throw away some money and learn tricks you'll quickly discover are wrong, buy this horrible book.

I've bought a few different 'how to draw manga' books but most of them seem to focus too much on the basics, which is annoying because I've already got a little experience in drawing. This book explains more about different genres and how you can apply them to your artwork and what you can do to emphasise the manga style, and a lot of useful tips for character design.

The photoshop tutorials are very comprehensive! They really helped me to improve how I was making my photoshop coloured pictures so I have a lot more control over how they look now.

I also like the section the book on making comic pages and applying screentone! You can get some pretty impressive manga style looks by following the steps in the book.

My only criticism of this book is that some of the introduction was stuff I already knew, but only about 15 pages or so and the artwork was good in those bits anyway.

Highly recommended!

An excellet guide. Clear and instructive and thoughtful. Though the focus is on digital manga techniques it also gives tips on how to construct decent stories, characters and many other tips to take you beyond the basics.
An excellent book for a someone who has got a grasp of the basics.
