Children's writing has been gaining in respectability in recent years - Philip Pullman deservedly won the Whitbread! Given that encouraging our children to read and explore their imaginations is a central responsibility of parenthood, it's about time the adult publishing world swallowed its pomposity and took writing for children seriously.

A&C Black have certainly done so. Their "Writers' & Artists' Yearbook" has been staple fare for years, an essential tool for thousands of professional and amateur writers. Their release of a "Children's" edition is timely recognition of both the professionalism required to write a good book for children, and of the quality of the writers who have already succeeded in their craft - look at Debi Gliori, Anne Fine, Pullman himself, Dick King-Smith, or Michael Morpurgo ... who provides the introduction to this volume.

There are some great writers and illustrators out there, and the competition is getting fiercer. So this "Children's Writers' & Artists' Yearbook" is set to become an essential tool. It follows the pattern of providing market advice - listing publishers, magazines, television producers, agents, online resources, etc. - backed by a series of articles on the techniques of writing, copyright, tax, etc.

An essential tool and a source of inspiration and motivation. If you write for children ... or would like to, then this book has to be on your desk.
