Product Description

Product Description

Using a vast amount of data that the British Trust for Ornithology have collected from ringing recoveries, this title presents detailed and up-to-date information on bird migration. Since the ringing programme began in 1909, there have been around half a million recoveries of birds ringed in the UK. The data yielded have enabled the BTO to build up a picture of the movements of around 200 migratory species, and this book presents that information in a clear and concise format.

5.0 out of 5 stars Essential reading for migration fans, 1 Jul 2003
By A Customer
This weighty and impressive tome, details information gathered by the British Trust for Ornithology and their partner organisations, through their various surveys, in particular through bird-ringing. The detail of bird movements is amazing, with details of the origins of birds coming to Britain and the wintering places of birds from Britain.
The data used for this book is the result of years of dedicated work by many volunteer workers, who can now read the fruits of their labours, and as such is the result of generations of hard work and learning of literally hundreds or thousands of people.
This book should be a reference to all serious birders and conservation workers alike.
It is a simply magnificent piece of work!

5.0 out of 5 stars Remarkable Book., 22 May 2009
By SCM (Victoria, Australia) - See all my reviews
The amount of work carried out to make this book possible is staggering. At the book itself reflects this. This book is testament to both the work of the BTO and the many ringers who have worked in the field. The species accounts are highly detailed and include accounts of both migrations with the UK and between countries.
This is a serious book, and I would think that it would become a well thumbed part of any keen birders library. However, I think it's more important than just a book for hobbyist - given the importance that some areas of habitat have as "stop over" venues for migrating birds this book also has a vital role to play in the developement of conservation projects within and beyond the UK. I cannot recommend this book highly enough.
