5.0 out of 5 stars Essential for all stage performers!, 29 April 2003
By A Customer
This new book by the highly experienced specialist psychologist and ex-professional musician Andrew Evans is aimed at the widest possible range of people who need to stand up in front of others and perform or speak publically. It's purpose is to uncover and challenge the reasons for stage fright, low self-belief, motivational problems and the dreaded 'internal critic' that afflicts most performers. It offers practical and easy to read guidance in a straightforward style. Andrew confronts us with some startling facts as to how many of the reasons for stagefright and misplaced motivation can be traced back to quite innocuous childhood experiences, the unwitting comments of parents, peers and teachers, as well as to our own concepts of 'showbusiness' and how the world around us views 'performers'. Some of the findings in the book stopped me in my tracks as I realised with a jolt that self-destructive patterns Andrew described were exactly those which I had unconsciously inflicted on myself for many years, and that I had thought were demons exclusively my own! In the few weeks I have owned it, I have found this book to be a revelation, offering me reassurance and relaxed confidence. (Andrew mentions another book, 'The Inner Game of Music' by Barry Green which is another 'bible' for the performer - if you don't own this one, you certainly should!) I strongly recommend Andrew's book - there is no reason for any of us, whether dancers, stand-up comics, classical violinists, opera singers or any performer should suffer nerves or self-doubt doing that which we love best.

5.0 out of 5 stars banishing fear, 20 May 2003
By M. B. Lloyd-Elliott (London England) - See all my reviews

Another excellent book from psychologist Andrew Evans and in my judgement, this is the best yet. I found it both practical and immediate in the help it provided for me as a public speaker. There are few of us who do not feel some anxiety about performance - this book effortlessly dissects the causality and origins of such fears and empowers the reader to change their experience both of themselves and of performance. A must read for anyone involved in performance or teaching and a great gift for fellow performers as well.

5.0 out of 5 stars A Performers A to Z, 26 Dec 2003
By Paul A. Sogaard - See all my reviews
(REAL NAME)
The great thing about Andrew Evans' book is that it firstly covers all aspects of a performers life from early childhood performance to retirement. Secondly the book is a very useful tool not only for performers but also for parents who may not happen to be performers or otherwise involved in the world of the arts, but who do have children who might consider becoming a musician, actor or dancer.
Because of Evans' first hand experience of life as a performer and also as an Art Psychologist, his advice and observations are directly linked to "the world outside".
So, if you are a parent and your child wants to be a rock star or the next famous ballet dancer this book will give you the answers to many of the questions that you and your child might have. Because the world of the arts is so filled with questions like "but what if?" and many parents are worried about the financial side of a performers life, the book can help you to learn what is important in creating and manintaining a healthy life as a performer. It also gives a very precise picture of the performers inner life and why he/she is different to non performers.

One of the most important chapters is Counselling and Healthcare for Performers. Many performers are not aware of the possibilities that are available to them and Evans gives expert advice on how and where to get help.

This book is maybe the best on the market for the moment and I will strongly recommend you to buy it if you are looking for inspiration, advice or help. Andrew Evans knows what he is writing about and he cares deeply about the health of the performer as an artist and human being.
