Product Description

Amazon.co.uk Review
For many sailors and yachtsmen, the ultimate challenge is to cross an ocean by the power of nature alone. Months of preparation and sheer dedication are required for such an adventure, but anybody who wishes to accept the challenge, or indeed is curious for an insight into such an adventure, should purchase The Atlantic Crossing Guide.

This book is more like an ongoing project as the original publication was produced by the Royal Cruising Club Pilotage Foundation in 1983 by the late Phil Allen and has now reached its 4th edition under the guidance of Hammick and McLaren. Every aspect of long-haul sailing is addressed the 230 pages, ranging from preparing the boat and equipment, navigation and communications, and suggested sailing routes. Weather guidelines are given for both the north and south Atlantic and advice of how to cope with extremes of weather. There are also weather and coastal charts of some of the main harbours on both sides of the Atlantic in England, Spain, Portugal, United States and even Bermuda and South Africa.

This is a thorough guide for anybody who is considering a transatlantic voyage and will give all the information you need to begin your preparation for the adventure. --Steven Payne --This text refers to an out of print or unavailable edition of this title.

5.0 out of 5 stars Don't go without it, 14 Nov 2001
By A Customer
This has to be the best laid out and most useful content of pilots for sailing the Atlantic. I used it on my first crossing and will use it next time too.

5.0 out of 5 stars Practical advice in clear concise form, 26 Mar 2003
By A Customer
This useful book is part of the Adlard coles pilotage series. It answers a lot of questions - what are the different route options (with detailed coverage of each route); when is the best time to go; when and where does the fog occur; where are the icebergs; what is the weather like and when; what are the currents you will come across; what are the limits of the gulf stream; what ports of call present themselves, what facilites are there en route and so on. As well as these questions, the book also covers the provisions you might need, the mechanics of cruising (paperwork, money, books, log book, watchkeeping, docking plans, clothing, fishing, the law, landfall, pests and insurance); the crew (recruitment, replacement en route, training and the skipper) and equipment you would need (electronics, rig, steering, awnings, trysail etc).
This book has received a lot of good reviews. Yachting World described it as 'a major contribution to sailing literature' and the Nautical magazine said it had a 'mass of useful information' I would agree. Perhaps the best thing about a book of the Atlantic is that much of the information does not date so you can use the book for years to come.

5.0 out of 5 stars Excellent guide, 7 Jun 2006
By Michael G. Elms (London United Kingdom) - See all my reviews
(REAL NAME)
This is essential reading for anyone considering making an Atlantic crossing - it covers everything from provisioning to how to get on with your crew. It's also got some useful pilot information on likely stopping places en route and when you get to the other side. Quite expensive but nothing's cheap when it comes to sailing!
