Product Description

Product Description

Bernard Moitessier is considered one of the greatest blue water sailors of the 20th century. Best known, perhaps, for abandoning the Sunday Times Golden Globe singlehanded round the world race when in the lead, in order to make almost another complete circumnavigation (the same race in which Donald Crowhurst's boat was found mid Atlantic after his suicide) he was already a legend in the making. This book is Moitessier's first, and it tells the story very charmingly of his shipwreck in the Indian Ocean after a monumental monsoon and how he built himself a new boat from scratch with no boat plans, power tools or financial resources in just 9 months. He made his own rope from nylon scraps found on the quay, built his own galvanized steel water tanks and sewed his own sails. With a commentary by Adlard Coles on heavy weather sailing, Sailing to the Reefs offers a treasury of practical hints for the self-reliant sailor and an entertaining read for armchair cruisers.

About the Author

Bernard Moitessier became a legend not only among sailors for his incredible sailing feats, but also among ecologists and others for his commitment to transforming and improving the world. He wrote three other books, Cape Horn; The Logical Route, Tamata and the Alliance and The Long Way, the last one available from Adlard Coles Nautical. Bernard Moitessier died in the summer of 1994.

4.0 out of 5 stars Armchair sailing, 25 Sep 2005

An excellent book detailing the ups and downs of life at sea for the infamous Frenchman (Moitessier). From the Indian Ocean to the Carribean, our friend has a few unscheduled meetings with rocks and reefs, builds himself a new boat, and between his long-distance passages spends rather a long time in each of his few ports of call. I thoroughly enjoyed reading about the tropical locations that Moitessier visited in this book, where he gives the reader a colourful overview of the customs, the locals and the habitat. The author also gives the reader a comprehensive view of singlehanded sailing, adding plenty of detail about the sailing techniques he likes to use and writes about his ideas for improving life aboard.

If you enjoy reading cruising logs, then this one is a must!
