1.0 out of 5 stars This is simply a reference to other, more detailed books, 31 Jul 2001
By A Customer
Having been given the "Long Distance Path Chart" which is an excellent, at a glance, map for all the long distance paths in the UK, I thought I would buy the companion book "The Long Distance Walkers' Handbook". It was a major disappointment.

It simply lists the paths in alphabetical order, give a 2 to 8 line description of the walk and then tells you which publications you can buy to follow the walk. For [the money] I could have telephoned a heck of a lot of tourist information offices by now and received more information.

This is definitely a waste of money and one of the few times when I wish I had gone into a bookshop and had a look first.

5.0 out of 5 stars An indispensable reference work for long distance walkers, 5 May 2002
If you are interested in walking Long Distance Footpaths, and want comprehensive information about routes in the Uk, this publication is a must. Details of 638 routes are packed into its 308 densely packed pages, and it is excellent value.

If you are looking for detailed descriptions of routes you will be disappointed, but that is not the purpose of this book. It lists up to date, accurate information about every Long Distance Route, as well as a list of publications. Sixteen sources of information are quoted for the Pennine Way alone, and no route, however obscure has escaped its notice.

The book is an indespensable reference work and could be described as the Long Distance Walkers Bible.
