This book is a fascinating slice of laser history, giving details of the boat's origins and early years. The interviews with top laser sailors of the 1970s are also interesting. Unfortunately, the book is now many years out of date: the class has moved on so much since that the techniques described are now mostly of historical interest: for example, we no longer need to worry about dealing with a kicker with no extra purchase! Consequently, it's not to be recommended for laser sailors looking for practical tips: try Ben Ainslie's Laser Campaign Manual instead.

This book is aimed at the intermediate to advanced sailor with the bulk of the content addressing refinements of technique and boat tuning.

As a consequence this book is not really suitable for the beginner as the language frequently slips into the arcane terminology understood only by the experienced sailor and pays only lip service to the basic skills.

Given the universal popularity of the laser and it's appeal to beginners, there is obviously a need for a book aimed at lesser mortals - unfortunately (for me) this is not it

This book sums up the intermediate-higher aspects of laser racing, it is written by a olympic champion, who advises on:Checking a boat, setting it up for different conditions and how to keep fit both mentally and physically.

I enjoyed reading this book mainly because Bruce Kirby explains how he started designing and how the thing grew up. I found this alone is worth the price. Read more
