4.0 out of 5 stars An excellent practical guide to the world of voice-overs., 30 Jul 2001
For all those who disregard the commercial voice-over as background noise, there must be an equal number who wish it was their voice lending credence to the product or programme. This is just what Bernard Graham Shaw is aiming to encourage in this book. From describing the world and work of voice-over artists, to guiding the beginner through the whole process, this book is an easy to read and practical guide. There are plenty of examples of scripts, from comic to corporate, to practice on, and a clear description of the recording studio which will alleviate any fears of this strange environment. He guides you through making your own tape in clear and concise terms and follows this with ways and means to sell your voice and find work. There is a comprehensive glossary and a listing of contacts to follow up, along with a free CD giving examples of how and how not to. Those already working in the field could benefit from this book broadening their skills but it is essentially aimed at the beginner for whom it is an invaluable guide. Ultimately though only your voice can sell your voice.

4.0 out of 5 stars Great resource for those thinking about becoming a voiceover, 22 Jun 2002
This book is a great read for anyone thinking about becoming a voiceover. It is very good at covering the many different types of scripts the voiceover encounters, and what the voiceover must think about before voicing each script. It is great that the scripts are voiced on the CD so you can hear how a professional does it, and the CD also includes music beds so that the reader can practice. I help run a website for professional and aspiring voiceovers and have always recommended this title. The only criticisms are that the book is quite biased towards voicing commercials (as opposed to narration) and some of the information is slightly out of date - but overall it's a great read.

5.0 out of 5 stars An excellent and practical guide to the voice over world., 1 Sep 2005

(REAL NAME)
An excellent introduction to the almost hidden world of voice overs. Helpfull chapters covering voice tecnique, examples of voice over scripts and sections on realistically finding work. With none of the usual claims about getting rich quite as a voice over. This is a book for drama graduates and established actors only, and the CD is great for people like me with a multi track tape recorder to practice and produce voice recordings. As far as i can see this is the only guide you'll need.
