5.0 out of 5 stars Takes the effort out of planning a training program., 31 Aug 2001
This review is from: The Cyclist's Training Bible: A Complete Training Guide for the Competitive Road Cyclist (Cycling) (Paperback)
Joe Friel has produced an excellent training guide for the competitive cyclist. All aspects of training are covered, from specific on-the-bike drills to cross training and nutrition. The information is structured in an extremely user friendly format making the creation of a personalised year long training program simple and informed. The book contains the latest in sports science research like using lactate threshold pulse rate instead of maximum pulse rate as a training focal point, special emphasis on rest and a very interesting introduction to the 'neolithic diet'. The only problem I found with the book is that it often leaves you craving more information on a given topic than it contains. Fortunately, all the chapters are backed up with a comprehensive reading list.

5.0 out of 5 stars Excellent and Methodical, 6 Nov 2003
By "wibble_world_ruler" (Great Bookham, Surrey United Kingdom) - See all my reviews
This review is from: The Cyclist's Training Bible: A Complete Training Guide for the Competitive Road Cyclist (Cycling) (Paperback)
I had been training and racing for several years, picking up information from here and there. The one thing I was missing was a method for working out a detailed structure and a framework for making decisions as to on what areas to concentrate.

Then, a few years ago, I bought this book. Most books on training are aimed at people with all the time they need to train. This book takes a real work perspective and allows you to make the right decisions bearing in mind all the limiting factors, from the physical to the simple fact that most ordinary people have a limited time in which to train.

So, with the focus this book gave me, even though my time was more limited than ever, I trained to the best of my ability and resources and then a raced a handful of races in my category. Needless to say, I was placed in most races and got enough points to go up a category straight away. For this simple fact, I highly recommend this book to everyone!

Next year, I am going to try Triathlon.. needless to say, I am buying Joel's triathlon training bible too!

5.0 out of 5 stars It WILL help you improve your performance!, 24 Oct 1999
By A Customer
This review is from: The Cyclist's Training Bible: A Complete Training Guide for the Competitive Road Cyclist (Cycling) (Paperback)
A large number of books that deal with serious cycle training fall into the category of 'Training level clones' which hark back to Keen et al. The content of this book came as a breath of fresh air! The carefully explained training strategies are underpinned by sensible reference to human physiology and the 'realities of life'. You can coach yourself whilst feeling that Joe Friel knows exactly what you are going through! Incidentally, his companion book, 'Cycling Past 50' is superb for those of us who still have dreams of improving their cycling performance when we should know better!! My own personal bests at '10' and '25' miles are testament that it works!!
